Hi there. I'm moving up to Portland on July 1st and would like to meet some cool people who like to game. I haven't played D&D since highschool (about 12 years ago) but I just picked up 4th ed. Player's Handbook and would love to find a good group
My dad taught me how to play D&D when I was a kid in middle school and I played a bunch of RPGs all through highschool with my buddies. I currently play a lot of boardgames with my current friends, but like I said, it's been a while for D&D (or any RPG for that matter.) So I guess the short answer would be, I've been gaming for about 17 years.
I think that an ideal group should have at least four players and in my experience gets kind of bogged down with more than 6.
I would say it's probably about a 60/40 on the RP side.
I tend to pick Rogue types with lots of sneak/disguise/trickery types of abilities. I think it's more fun to create a character that doesn't mind sneaking in the shadows or being a little bit underhanded to get his way. The only character I usually stay away from is the cleric class because he doesn't seem to get to see a lot of action in combat (although it seems like 4th ed addresses that.) However, I'm currently thinking about rolling up a Dragonborn paladin.
Well my ideal DM would be somebody who really knows how to craft a compelling story and plays his NPCs intelligently. I like a blend of problem/solving and combat encounters. My ideal group would be with people who know how to play well together and are just fun to be around. Some of the funniest things my friends and I ever said to eachother was over a game of D&D, it would be pretty cool if I could find a group who enjoy the game and also enjoy each other's company.
