I'm currently DMing a 4E D&D game with a mix of RPG newbies and veterans, and am looking for ways to mess around in 4E as a player. I enjoyed & still like 3.5, but I'm a big fan of the new rules -- all I need now is more days in the week to play!
Ideally, I'd like to see a game that fuses the combat "crunch" of D&D 3.x/4E with the innovative social interaction rules of a game like Dogs in the Vineyard, and run by a GM that truly values and rewards creativity in roleplaying.
I love to play the Bard. Useless as he was combat-wise in your typical 3e game, the concept of the wandering lore-gatherer with arcane properties is compelling. In 4e, they're great, and I enjoy being the high-Charisma "face" of an adventuring party.
I suppose I prefer a 50-50 RP/combat split, because I don't think they should always be considered separate. The best players are those that stay in RP-mode even when fighting kobolds and zombies, rather than shifting to a pure metagaming mentality.
I think the sweet spot can fall anywhere between 3 and 6 players (not including the GM). Four or five is optimal, but everything in the 3-6 range is fun and still manageable for a GM. Right now, for instance, I've got 6 people playing, and it's good.
I've been gaming for about 6 years, having started in high school with Star Wars d20. I've been GMing for about 3 years. Right now, I play in a friend's ShadowRun campaign, in addition to DMing.
