I've been in the Portland area for about a year now and have been looking for a group to game with and socialize. I have not played D&D in earnest in about 20 years, and have attempted other game systems with no great luck. The release of 4E relit
D&D has been a good while ago with regularity and effort. Once upon a time I would spend plenty of time writing adventures and creating maps and campaigns. I have also tried my hand with MTG, Settlers of Cataan, a variety of on-line PC and console multiplayers (though no WOW)over the last 20 years.
I like the variety and chaos that comes from 5-6 PCs in a party. 5-6 is more fun. 3-4 tends to be a little more serious, from my experience.
I'll split the difference and say 60-40. Combat is fun if it takes all of your skill and a big party makes it interesting. I tend to like the RP cause I like to spin yarns as a DM and play the politics and diplomacy game. I'll always try to find a way around combat since it is usually more engaging.
I tend to lean towards goody two-shoes like Clerics and Paladins. Fighters are fun but they tend to fall into the slash and stab column I try to avoid. I played a cleric during the D&D day and really dug the new 4E magic system. No more 4HP 1-spell magic users.
I'd be either playing or DMing a big campaign with plenty of traps, intrigue, double crosses and specific combats like assassinations, sniper missions, bounty hunts, etc. There would be a lot of story and dialogue.
