The mailing list address for our group, Portland Dungeons & Dragons Meetup, has been changed. The new mailing list address is now PDXVancgamefinder-list@meetup.com. If you are using an address book or filter with your e-mail client, you may want to update your settings to reflect the most current address.

I have just turned on the mailing list for our meetup group. This mailing list will be for people to advertise their games and find other players. You will have to subscribe to the list in order to get the emails, to get started, please sign up for the mailing list! You have to sign up on the site: http://www.meetup.com.... For now I have it set to allow anyone to post, however the posts will have to be approved by me before they will go out to the rest of the list. If I feel your post is inappropriate to the list (i.e. about something other than looking for new players or a new game in which to play) it will not be sent out to the rest of the list. Please refrain from foul language or derogatory comments about other players.

I'm confused. What does this mean?

In the past I would only receive mass emails from the meetup for events. Now I'm getting emails from various people looking for me to join their group (three today). And I didn't sign up - at least not purposely. I like the events notifications, but I don't want the group invites.

This leads to some questions:
1) was there something flawed in the message board process to get people to form groups?
2) can I get off this mailing list since I'm not interested in joining a ne group?
3) if I get off this mailing list will it block the event notices that I do want?

Please advise.

The mailing list can be un-subscribed by the same link I posted above to subscribe to it. The mass mailings from events on the calendar are sent out differently as far as I know so un-subscribing from the mailing list won't effect you getting those mailings. I believe that answers questions two and three. As for question number one. It had been brought to my attention by people who have been posting in the threads looking for games and players that they just don't seem to be reaching anyone. I believe this is mainly due to lower than usual traffic on the message board brought about by the great weather we have been having. One person asked me specifically if there was a way to mass email the group about a game or looking for players. This is the only kind of emails I will be allowing for the mailing list, any other messages will not be approved for the list and will not get sent out.

Sorry but it looks like the best you can do as far as unsubscribing from the mailing list is to select the messages from Organizers only option. You will then stop receiving all of the emails and just get ones posted by organizers of the meetup.

As the purpose of this meetup group is to help players find games in which to play I am going to keep this mailing list going for a while yet on a trial period. If it becomes too big of a hassle I will shut it off, however it is a simple matter for anyone to change their mailing list preferences so that they don't receive the mass mailings. In the meantime it seems to have already been successful in helping a group form on the west side of town for a campaign in just two days of operation.

It seems that I can remove people from the mailing list but leave them as members of the meetup group. If you would like to have your email removed from the mailing list please just send me a note and I will be happy to do that for you. I do believe that you will no longer get email about upcoming meets if you go that route however.

Thanks for the advice, Jim.

I followed the link and changed my preferences as follows:
--I'd like to receive mailing list messages from...organizers only
--Who can contact you on this site?...any member of Meetup.com
--Who can post greetings on your profile?...any member of Meetup.com

This should mean that I'll still get emails for events when those emails are sent from the organizers. And if anyone wants to contact me specifically, they still can. Of course, if it works, I'll never know what messages I'm not getting.
wink

I'm fully in support of folks using the mailing list option to look for players and games. I agree that one of the purposes of the Meetup group is to help people find each other for games. If the message board wasn't working, I support giving this new method a try.

Game on!

tHERE IS ALSO A DIGEST VERSION YOU CAN RECEIVE IF YOU'D LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT OTHER GROUPS, but don't want your inbox filled up with each individual message.

Also if you want to be completely removed from the mailing list please send me your user name on the meetup group. There are a number of people who have a user name that is no where near their real name and I don't have the capability to cross reference with your email address easily. Easiest way for me to remove you from the mailing list is if you supply me with your user name for meetup.

I like the new mailing list. I agree that the forum based LFG method just doesn't work very well. The posts get old and not deleted so there is no way to tell if its still valid. Also they are not zip code searchable which can play a factor when looking for a group.

I think using any tool to help assist players connecting up with one another is excellent and I thank Jim for making it easier for that to happen.
